I think that the fact that america's children are the future of the nation kept them going. Even with little or no pay they knew that the only way that the United States was only going to get fixed by teaching the next generations how to fix the mistakes that the previous generation had made.
They also knew how important it was for the children to get an education because without it they would not be able to have a future.
If I was a teacher right now and a great depression situation happened and we stopped getting paid i would take into consideration my family. If we could keep on our feet without me getting paid then i would probably keep teaching and coaching. If it would be impossible to keep my family fed and paying the bills I would have to find another job. Maybe a police officer or something. My family would play a major part in my decision to keep teaching with little or no pay.
